What is laminate flooring?

Laminate flooring is a stylish and resilient alternative to hardwood flooring. With changes in manufacturing technology over the years, laminate floors perform better than ever before and coming in ultra-realistic designs and textures that mimic expensive hardwood floors at a fraction of the cost.

What is laminate flooring made of?

Laminate is typically referred to as a “hybrid” floor because of its high-density fiberboard (HDF) core topped with an image layer and wear layer. • Wear layer: Laminate wear layers are commonly water resistant, scratch and stain resistant, and provide a realistic feel. Wear layers can range from a smooth finish to a rougher more natural feel. • Image layer: This layer holds the pattern or print, making the laminate look like wood or stone. • Core layer: This layer is typically made of compressed high-density fiberboard allowing the flooring to be durable and stable. The core layer is also typically where the locking system is located. • Backing layer: The backing layer prevents water from penetrating the subfloor. A high-quality backing can help protect the laminate flooring from peaking and moister damage.

Do I need to seal my laminate flooring?

No, laminate flooring does not need to be sealed. Laminate flooring comes with a wear layer that protects against stain and scratches. It is not advised to add additional sealant to your laminate flooring as if could damage and potentially make them more slippery.

What does laminate floor peaking mean?

Laminate floor peaking is referring to buckling, warping and cupping. Peaking typically happens when there is improper space the the laminate flooring to expand and contract, or if there is excessive moisture including high humidity in the environment. Improper installation, meaning not enough space between the edges of the floor and walls can cause buckling. If peaking is left uncorrected, your laminate floor can eventually lift off entirely.

Is laminate flooring water resistant?

Newer manufacturing technology allows newer laminates to be more water resistant. This is a change from the older versions of laminate flooring. Older laminate was not recommended for areas with moisture as it would cause damage to the laminate. However, laminate has come a long way in the last few years and now has many options that are more water resistant.
