What is vinyl flooring?

The vinyl used for flooring today has come a long way from what you might remember. Vinyl, or “resilient flooring” can be defined as sheet vinyl, luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), or luxury vinyl planks (LVP). Vinyl is an extremely durable, and fashionable flooring choice. It typically has great manufacturer warranties and a large array of designs and styles to suit every unique home. Vinyl today offers a more affordable and sometimes more durable product than hardwood and tile, while replicating the look of hardwood and tile.

Can you install vinyl over existing flooring?

The answer to this is a little complex. Yes, you can with some types of flooring. However, it is not smart or desirable in all instances. When installing over a preexisting floor, this will cause the new floor to be higher than the existing floor. Resulting in height variances and tripping hazards in your floor which is not alway desirable.

Are vinyl floors waterproof?

While vinyl is water resistant and one of the better flooring options in areas such as bathrooms and kitchens, it is not fully waterproof. With that said, you will typically not have issues with normal spills as you would with hardwoods. It is always best to wipe up spills when you see them to keep your floors looking beautiful.

Are vinyl floors scratch resistant?

Yes, vinyl floors are scratch resistant. It is a great flooring option for homes with dogs as their nails can scratch hardwoods, but are less likely to scratch vinyl. With that said, vinyl is not scratch proof. Therefore, it is best to take precautions to avoid scratches (i.e. felt pads on furniture legs/feet, trimming dogs nails regularly, etc)

What are advantages of LVT/LVP over sheet vinyl?

Sheet vinyl typically tends to be a lower end look and for people trying to keep costs very minimal. While LVT/LVP replicates the look of wood and tile better and give a luxury look because they are laid in a pattern similar to tile or hardwood. Another upside to having LVT/LVP is should a plank get scratched, you can typically replace a plank or a two and then have no more issues. However, if you scratch sheet vinyl you would need to replace the entire piece to get rid of the scratch.

Can I put vinyl in my basement?

Yes, you can put all vinyl in basement and it is a great option. However, some are more difficult than others and you will want to select the type depending on a few factors. Are the subfloors flat? If your subfloor in your basement is not completely flat, you will want to purchase a glue down type. Floating floors with click locking mechanisms will not holdup well in this type of situation because the floor will not be sitting flat. This will cause the click locks to break or come apart and can cause cracking of the planks. Will you be installing directly over cement subfloors? If this case you will want to choose a product that has a cushion backing included as part of the plank/tile. This will give you a slight added cushion so it doesn’t feel like you are walking directly on cement. In any instance, vinyl allows a wide variety of options that will be great and last a long time in your basement.
